Citation Styles

Citation commands control how references appear in running text.

  • \parencite: parenthetical
  • \textcite: narrative
  • \footcite: footnote-oriented styles

Use narrative commands when author names are part of sentence grammar; use parenthetical commands when they are not.

Compact citation markers, often used in technical disciplines.

Readable for humanities and social science workflows.

Useful when citations carry explanatory detail.

Document the selected style and commands in project notes so collaborators produce consistent output.

Start from your journal, department, or publisher requirements. If no style is mandated, choose the style that balances readability and disciplinary norms.

Test citations for multiple authors, missing dates, and repeated citations. These are common cases where style behavior becomes visible.
